The Kano Civil Society Election Situation Room has commended the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) as well as the State Government for conducting what it describes as “a well-organized local government election”.

The Coordinator of the situation room and Executive Director, Citizens for Development and Education, Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya, made the commendation in Kano on Sunday.

According to Wayya, the group received wonderful reports about the impressive turnout of voters, peaceful conduct of the election and compliance with the movement restriction order while the poll lasted.

He said despite the non-participation of security personnel in the election, the state remained calm and peaceful, which he said, was an indication that the people of the state “are in tune with the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.”

“We must commend the state government and KANSIEC under the able leadership of Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi for a well-organised election.

“For the first time, we are seeing a large number of people coming out to vote during local government elections, and despite the withdrawal of security personnel, there had been no report of any security threat.

“This shows that the people of the state are solidly behind their governor and willing to defend democracy despite some deliberate unsuccessful obstructions from some quarters”, he said.

The coordinator also commended the media for exhibiting professionalism in their reportage of the poll and encouraged them to maintain the feat beyond the election.

Reports say that the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state, had won all 44 chairmanship positions and all the 484 councillorship seats contested during the election.

KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, who announced the results of the election on Saturday, said the exercise was “largely peaceful and successful in all ramifications”.
