A Community Dialogue Committee (CDC) in Kano has called on residents to not only allow young girls to attain heights in education, but to also encourage them to be enterprising.
The Chairman of the CDC, Alhaji Muhammad Nura Kabiru, made the call while speaking to newsmen in Kano on Thursday during the commemoration of this year’s International Day for the Girl Child.
He expressed dismay with the way young girls have their education terminated halfway and forced into marriage.
A capacity building session was held for young girls from schools across Kano, organized by the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative along with it’s partners the UKaids and Global Rights.
With the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I lead” young girls were mobilized to pursue their dreams in education while calling on parents to support them.
The CDC reiterated the need for education as the basis for making life better for girl child in the community.
“The most important change we want is on the girl child education. The problem is always the issue of terminating her education half way and forcing her into marriage. She’s not allowed to achieve anything educationally.
“Secondly, this has led to discriminating against them in a lot of things capitalizing on their lack of knowledge.
“We are raising awareness on this and ensuring that there is change and the girl child is not only allowed, but also encouraged to attain heights in education and the society as well” he stated.
Speaking on behalf for the Isa Wali Empowerment Initiative, the Program Officer, Aisha Saminu Jibo, says they are working with the CDC to enlighten the communities on the rights of the girl child.
“We are empowering the girls, and letting them know that they can achieve more in life and have more to contribute to their communities” she said.
