Following the state of emergency on education declared by the Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf, some principals have advised the government on how best to overhaul the system and achieve a better output.

Speaking to Leadership on Wednesday in Kano, the Headmaster of Garindau Primary School, in Warawa local government area of Kano, Murtala Aliyu expressed hope that if those things are implemented the state of emergency on education will succeed.

Speaking particularly on his school, he explained that the entire school is flooded annually during the raining season, adding that the school also lacks security guards, a situation that has caused them a lot.

“Even today when we arrived in the morning, we saw that some zinc roofing sheets have been stollen, although we have a fence around the school we need it to be raised higher and four more security guards be employed, two for the day time and two for the night time.

“We have 2,012 pupils in all, so we need more toilets, we need solar powered borehole to provide water for the school.

“The government should renovate the old classrooms to standard, replace the lost roofs, doors and windows, as it adds one storey building of four classes and offices.

“Just yesterday we received 80 pieces of the three-seater chairs and desks but we need five times more considering the number of students we are having in the school.

“One very important thing is that we need more qualified teachers because there are only 18 teachers to these over 2,000 pupils. We also need a dispensary and a health worker” the Headmaster advised.

At Ajingi local government area, this reporter visited Chula Central Primary School, where the Headmaster, Haruna Ibrahim, complained that they don’t have enough classes for their 1,270 pupils, adding that they don’t have enough teachers.

“It is even with the coming of the current administration that our number of teachers were increased to 12. We need more teachers to meet up with the nine years program of six years in primary and three years in Junior Secondary School.

“We need more classrooms here because the primary schools in the neighbouring villages come here to write their common entrance examination.

“They come from villages like Tudun Karago, Guzawa and Yan Kinta, and all of them are sent here for the JSS.

“We need a fence round the school, a staffroom, a dispensary, more toilets, furniture and a library” he stated.

The headmasters called on the state government to ensure the total overhaul ot the education sector under the current state of emergency on education in the state.
