The former Nigeria Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has declared that he dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) because the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) government has taken over the party.

He stated this in a special Independence Day interview with the BBC Hausa service on Wednesday where he declared that it was not his fault but that of the sell outs within the party.

“I left the PDP because the APC led government has taken over the party and destroyed it, being the leading opposition party in the country” he stated.

However, he dismissed any blames associating him with allowing the party to be taken over by the ruling party saying “it is not our making but the making of some individuals who are sell outs” he declared.

On why he did not stay behind to fix things in the party but rather joined a coalition under the ADC, Atiku stated that he could not put things in shape because he had no authority or leadership role in the party.

“I can put things in shape in the party but unfortunately I was not the leader of the party. I was neither the chairman, nor the secretary, or a governor under the party, how then could I have put things in shape?

“We have founded a coalition under the ADC, and are still working to get the party well established and strong.

“I cannot for now say whether I will contest under the party or not, we are still working to strengthen the party” he stated.

The former vice president spoke on Nigeria at 65 saying that the country has not achieved enough or as expected from independence to date.

However, Nigeria has gone far in terms of infrastructure and other development sectors from independence to date.
