A call has been made by the Global Rights and Isah Wali Foundation for the inclusion of women in promoting peace, security and access to justice in Kano.

Following the recent attacks in some communities in Kano sharing boarders with Katsina state, a high-level townhall meeting was held on Thursday to emphasize the need for women inclusion in promoting peace security and access to justice.

Addressing newsmen at the event, the Programs Manager of Global Rights, Noya Sedi expressed the need to to hear from women in conflict resolutions and decision making in the communities.

“Is not news that in the Northwest, a unique setting, because it is a patriachal setting, Nigeria is a patriachal setting, but is more prominent in the Northwest.

“That is part of what informed the implementation of the program in Kano.

“We can see women are sidelined in peace building processes and are left out in conflict resolution and dialoguing.

“We have also seen that there is lack of physical access to justice for marginalized groups in the region.

“We hope that conversations like these just don’t start and end in the halls, there needs to be action so that people will see and implement then in their communities” she stated.

On her part, the Programs Officer of Isah Wali Foundation, Aisha Saminu Jibo, explained that there is need for women to be involved in decision making in promoting security and community peace as well as access to justice because better decisions will be made with them than when the decisions are made for them.

She explained that in crises periods women are mostly vulnerable but during dialogue and peace building in communities they are exempted.

“My message is that we should stop overlooking the women because they have a lot of roles to play.

“We need to bring them together and hear from them in fixing the security issues, peace and access to justice” she stated.

In attendance at the event were police, NSCDC, NDLEA, traditional rulers and legal practitioners.
