The National Association of Commissioners for Local Governments of Nigeria held a highly productive interactive meeting today at the Kano State Government House.

The meeting, chaired by Kano state deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam, brought together Commissioners for Local Government Affairs from Nigeria’s 36 states, along with other esteemed guests and stakeholders.

In his welcome address, Interim chairman of the Association, Abdussalam, expressed his deep appreciation for the strong turnout and the shared commitment to advancing local governance and autonomy across Nigeria’s Local Government Areas (LGAs).

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Shuaibu, the deputy governor lauded the active participation of members in the Association’s inaugural meeting in Abuja, where it’s foundation was laid, including the selection of it’s name and leadership structure.

Abdussalam highlighted the crucial role the Association plays in promoting transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s LGAs.

He further emphasized that as Commissioners, members hold significant responsibility in supervising local governance to ensure it operates effectively and in the best interest of their communities.

The Association, he noted, is a vital platform for collaboration, the sharing of best practices, and the advocacy of policies that will enhance the functionality and integrity of LGAs.

The interim Chairman also underscored the importance of inter-governmental collaboration between the Association and various federal government agencies.

Such cooperation, he said, is essential for enhancing autonomy and promoting good governance at the LGA level across the country.

He called for coordinated efforts among all levels of government to ensure that LGAs have the necessary resources, oversight, and support to operate independently and effectively.

Looking ahead, Gwarzo appealed to members to commit to regular monthly meetings, stressing that consistent engagement is key to maintaining momentum and ensuring the smooth progression of the Association’s initiatives.

He also encouraged members to volunteer to host these meetings, which would allow each state to showcase its unique perspectives and contributions.
