Gov Yusuf Inaugurates JCI To Investigate Violence That Marred Nationwide Protests

The Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry (JCI) to look into the violence that followed the nationwide protests in Kano where billions of Naira worth of property was destroyed.

The 14-man commission is lead by retired Justice Lawal Wada Mahmoud, a former State High Court judge, with members from the religious, Civil Society Organizations, Security agencies and the business community.

Inaugurating the Commission on Monday, governor Yusuf recalled inviting the peaceful protesters to the Government House to submit their demands, which he promised to submit to the presidency, which they did.

However, another set of miscreants carrying dangerous weapons came to the government house but were turned back by the security at the first gate after about three hours of effort.

“While this was happening at the government house, another set of thugs went wayward destroying public property worth billions of Naira.

“They destroyed the multi billion Naira IT hub that was about to be commissioned in the state. Stole the computers and furniture.

“They attacked the High Court and destroyed the Chief Judges office and did away with files.

“Some went to the Kano Printing Press we have renovated, that was put in place by late Audu Bako regime and destroyed and did away with a lot of things.

“They went violent, destroying shopping malls and and stealing property belonging to the members of the public. They even killed some people” the Kano governor lamented.

He stated that he promised to investigate the matter and deal with anyone involved in perpetrating violence in the state.

Governor Yusuf further promised the JCI that the state government will not interfere with it work thereby assuring them of a freehand as they deliver the task.

He called on the commission to also advise the state government on what to do with the destroyed infrastructure, how to proper solution to the problem and forestall future occurrence and also how to resolve the problem of unemployed youth roving about the streets.

Speaking in behalf of the commission, the chairman thanked the governor for seeing them worthy and giving the the task, while he promised that they would do their best to deliver.
