Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Mohammed Usaini Gumel has emphasized the importance of ensuring the security and safety of Nigerian courts and judicial officers.
Speaking at the national conference for magistrates, registrars, and deputies on security of judicial officers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Gumel highlighted the judiciary’s crucial role in defending democracy and protecting the will of the people.
Gumel lamented the numerous security challenges faced by courts and judicial officers in recent years, citing over 50 reported incidents in the past three years.
To address these challenges, he recommended a multi-faceted approach, including:
Physical Security Measures*: Installing electronic access control systems, CCTV cameras, and metal detectors to restrict entry to authorized personnel and monitor premises.
“Personnel Security: Conducting thorough background checks on all court staff, including judges, magistrates, and registrars.
“Regular Security Training: Providing training for all court staff and vetting and screening staff before assigning them to sensitive roles.
“Cybersecurity Measures: Implementing measures to protect against cyber threats and ensuring the safe handling of sensitive information” he stated.
To ensure effective implementation, Gumel emphasized the need for a detailed implementation roadmap, allocation of necessary resources, and establishing a monitoring and evaluation framework.
He called on all stakeholders to work together to protect the courts and judicial officers, ensuring justice is served without fear or favor.
